To be, to do, to improve

Scholarships & Golden Apple Awards

  • Merit-based scholarships to students
The Foundation provides annually merit-based scholarships to students of Nancheng, the home town of T.C. Young. There are three levels of scholarships: Gold, Silver and Bronze depending on the student academic performance.  Click here for the specifics for the current year plan.

  • Golden Apple grants to teachers
The Foundation awards annually “Golden Apple” grants to exceptional teachers in Nancheng.  Just like the student awards, there are three levels: Gold, Silver and Bronze based on the teacher performance. Click here for the specifics for the current year plan.

  • Need-based scholarships
In addition to merit scholarships, in September 2004, the Foundation started to award three need-based scholarships. They are awarded to students in good academic standing who could not attend school otherwise. Based on the feedback from the Schools,  the Foundation expanded this program to nine students in 2006.  It was further expanded to 10 in 2013, to 14 in 2014 and 15 in 2015.  In 2020 the Foundation resumed need-based scholarships. It awarded, from the pool of Merit recipients, 3 scholarships to those who most need of financial assistance to continue their education.

  • Harris School of Public Policy
  • On December 18th, 2019, the Foundation signed a four year partnership with the Harris School at the University of Chicago. It will fund a scholarship for students with a focus on China. Click here for the letter of gift.

Program administration
The scholarships are scheduled to be presented on the third week of every October. The Foundation representative in Shanghai usually attends this public ceremony.
The Foundation takes pride in being extremely cost efficient. Its administrative expenses represent less than 10% of its operating budget.
